The instrument operates by measuring the pressure difference between the high-pressure (HP) and low-pressure (LP) sides of a primary flow element such as an orifice plate, venturi tube, or flow nozzle. The resulting differential pressure is converted into precise mechanical motion, which can then actuate a recorder, indicator, or controller for continuous process monitoring. The Model 199 can also be applied to liquid level measurement by sensing the pressure difference created by varying liquid heights inside storage tanks or process vessels.

The unit incorporates BARTON’s renowned rupture-proof dual bellows technology, providing exceptional reliability under severe operating conditions. The bellows assembly is filled with a clean, non-corrosive, low-freezing-point liquid and equipped with an automatic temperature compensator to eliminate zero shifts caused by ambient temperature changes. Integrated over-range protection valves prevent bellows damage by trapping the internal fill liquid whenever differential pressure exceeds the instrument’s calibrated range, allowing the unit to withstand pressures up to its safe working pressure without permanent calibration changes.

An externally adjustable pulsation dampener is incorporated to reduce the effects of pressure fluctuations and flow pulsations commonly found in industrial piping systems. The response time can be adjusted from a few seconds to several minutes, ensuring stable and accurate measurements even in dynamic process conditions. Motion generated by the bellows is transmitted through a hermetically sealed torque tube assembly, eliminating leakage, minimizing friction, and requiring no lubrication throughout the service life of the instrument.

Working Principle

The Model 199 DPU uses two opposing liquid-filled bellows enclosed within pressure housings. Process pressure from the high-pressure and low-pressure sides is applied to each bellows chamber. Any difference between these pressures causes the bellows assembly to move proportionally to the differential pressure. The linear movement is balanced by calibrated range springs and converted into rotary motion through a sealed torque tube, which actuates the connected recording, indicating, or controlling instrument.
