The Series 7400 operates on the turbine flow measurement principle. As gas flows through the meter body, it passes through a precision flow conditioner and diffuser that directs the gas onto a multi-blade stainless steel turbine rotor. The rotor rotates at a speed directly proportional to the volumetric flow rate. A magnetic reluctance pickup coil mounted externally detects the passage of each rotor blade and generates a high-frequency sinusoidal pulse signal. The frequency of this pulse output is directly proportional to the gas flow rate, allowing accurate interfacing with electronic flow computers, totalizers, RTUs, PLCs, SCADA systems, and custody transfer equipment without requiring analog-to-digital conversion.

One of the principal advantages of the BARTON 7400 Series is its extremely fast rotor response, measured in milliseconds, enabling accurate measurement even when gas flow changes rapidly. The lightweight, low-inertia rotor minimizes bearing loads while providing exceptional repeatability and long-term stability. Standard repeatability is ±0.2% of flow rate, while linearity is typically better than ±1.0% of reading over the calibrated flow range.

The meter features a symmetrical bi-directional design, allowing accurate measurement of flow in either direction. Optional dual pickup coils provide redundancy or enable automatic flow direction detection. The rugged construction incorporates a 316 stainless steel body and internals, while the rotor is manufactured from 430 stainless steel and supported by sealed, self-lubricating precision bearings designed for a maintenance-free service life of up to 10 years under normal operating conditions.

The Series 7400 is available in threaded and flanged configurations with nominal sizes ranging from ¾ inch to 12 inches. Threaded models are offered with NPT or BSP connections, while flanged models comply with ASME B16.5 pressure ratings. Depending on meter size, pressure ratings reach up to 5,000 psi (345 bar) for smaller threaded models, making the flowmeter suitable for high-pressure natural gas service. Operating temperatures range from −29°C to +150°C as standard, with optional cryogenic versions capable of operation down to −196°C.

Each meter is factory calibrated using a multi-point water calibration to establish its average K-factor, verifying linearity and repeatability. For applications requiring enhanced low-flow performance or fiscal verification, optional gas calibration is available using gases with densities similar to the operating process gas. Installation in accordance with AGA Report No. 7 recommendations, including appropriate upstream straight pipe lengths and filtration, ensures the specified performance is achieved.
