Operating Principle

The DVC6200 operates as a closed-loop digital valve positioning system:

PLC / DCS → 4–20 mA Signal → DVC6200 → Pneumatic Output → Actuator → Control Valve

The controller receives the desired valve position from the control system and compares it with the actual valve travel obtained from its non-contact travel feedback system.

The DVC6200 then adjusts the pneumatic output pressure to the actuator until the actual valve position corresponds to the commanded position.

Typical signal relationships are:

  • 4 mA = approximately 0% command
  • 12 mA = approximately 50% command
  • 20 mA = approximately 100% command

The actual valve action depends on the selected actuator, valve configuration, calibration, and control-action settings.

Linkage-Less Non-Contact Feedback

The DVC6200 incorporates a linkage-less, non-contact valve travel feedback system. Unlike conventional positioners that use mechanical linkage components, the DVC6200 detects valve travel without continuous mechanical contact.

This design helps:

  • Reduce mechanical wear
  • Improve reliability
  • Reduce maintenance requirements
  • Improve resistance to vibration
  • Provide accurate valve-position feedback
  • Eliminate common problems associated with mechanical feedback linkages
HART Digital Communication

The DVC6200 provides HART digital communication, allowing technicians and engineers to configure, monitor, calibrate, and diagnose the valve assembly.

Through HART communication, users can access information including:

  • Input signal
  • Valve position
  • Valve travel
  • Output pressure
  • Instrument status
  • Diagnostic information
  • Calibration parameters
  • Configuration parameters
  • Alarm and status information
  • Device identification
  • Valve-performance information

This capability allows the DVC6200 to be integrated into modern plant asset-management and maintenance systems.

Pneumatic Output

The DVC6200 converts the electrical command signal into a pneumatic output for controlling the valve actuator.

The controller is available for:

  • Single-acting actuators
  • Double-acting actuators
  • Direct action
  • Reverse action

The pneumatic output is regulated according to the required valve position and actuator configuration.

Valve Diagnostics

A major advantage of the FIELDVUE DVC6200 is its ability to provide valve-performance monitoring and diagnostics.

The diagnostic functions can help maintenance personnel identify abnormal operating conditions and potential valve or actuator problems, including:

  • Valve sticking
  • Excessive friction
  • Abnormal valve travel
  • Actuator problems
  • Supply-air problems
  • Abnormal valve response
  • Calibration problems
  • Potential leakage conditions

This information can be used to support preventive and predictive maintenance, helping reduce unexpected control-valve downtime.

Automatic Calibration and Configuration

The DVC6200 supports digital configuration and automatic calibration using compatible Fisher/Emerson tools.

Typical functions include:

  • Automatic valve travel calibration
  • Input signal configuration
  • Valve travel configuration
  • Control-action configuration
  • Travel limits
  • Tuning parameters
  • Characterization
  • Diagnostic configuration
  • Device identification

Compatible configuration tools include HART Communicators, ValveLink™ Software, and Emerson asset-management systems, depending on the system configuration.

Valve Characterization

The DVC6200 can modify the relationship between the input signal and valve travel to achieve the required process-control response.

Available characterization functions may include:

  • Linear
  • Equal percentage
  • Quick opening
  • Custom characterization

This feature allows the valve response to be optimized for specific process-control requirements.

Actuator and Valve Compatibility

The DVC6200 can be applied to various pneumatic valve assemblies, including:

  • Sliding-stem control valves
  • Rotary control valves
  • Quarter-turn valves
  • Single-acting pneumatic actuators
  • Double-acting pneumatic actuators
  • Fisher control valves and compatible actuators

For applications where the controller cannot be installed directly on the valve, Emerson also provides remote-mounted configurations using the DVC6205/DVC6215 arrangement.

Low-Bleed Relay Option

The DVC6200 is available with an optional low-bleed relay designed to reduce steady-state instrument-air consumption.

This option can be particularly beneficial in large industrial facilities where compressed-air consumption and operating costs are important considerations.

Construction

The DVC6200 is designed for demanding industrial environments and incorporates robust construction features, including:

  • Fully encapsulated electronics
  • Industrial-grade housing
  • Robust pneumatic relay system
  • Non-contact feedback technology
  • Modular construction
  • Protection against vibration and harsh environmental conditions

The modular design also facilitates maintenance and replacement of selected components.

Typical Applications

The Fisher FIELDVUE DVC6200 is suitable for a wide range of process-control applications, including:

  • Flow control
  • Pressure control
  • Level control
  • Temperature control
  • Oil and gas processing
  • Refinery applications
  • Petrochemical plants
  • Chemical processing
  • Power generation
  • Water and wastewater treatment
  • General process industries
